About
A new exhibition ‘Soul Heaven’ has launched at Wednesbury Museum and Art Gallery, which captures a ‘link to musical times gone by when people lived for that one long soulful weekend’ explained artist Anthony MacFarlane. ‘Because soul music is associated with the style and coolness of scooters Soul heaven makes the link between scooters, fashion and early soul music.
Northern Soul is a style of music with associated dance styles and fashions that developed in the north of England in the late 1960s. In the beginning the dancing was athletic, featuring spins, flips, and drops.
The exhibition explores Anthony and his friends’ experiences in the 1980s of this scene with photographs, objects, fashion, logos and scooters on display. The objects are from personal collections and many of photographs were taken by the artist himself.
A version of the exhibition was first on display at Wednesbury Museum 10 years ago so it is great to have an even bigger and better version back this year.
The exhibition runs until the end of 2022 and it is free to visit and the museum will be running a host of workshops, events and activities to run alongside the exhibition for the rest of the year.
Wednesbury Museum is open Wednesdays and Thursdays 11am-3pm, Sunday 8th and 22nd May 1-3pm then from June every Saturday 11am-2pm. 0121 556 0683 for more iformation.
