Bromwich Hall Alive - Medieval mayhem and. Living History with Buckingham's Retinue. FREE. Part of National Heritage Open Days

About

Join us in the grounds and great hall of Bromwich Hall and travel back 600 years to the late medieval period and the Wars of the Roses. Buckingham's Retinue historical interpretation group will be setting up camp in the grounds where visitors can see knights and ladies, weapons displays, learn about weapons and armour, take part in knight school, and see medieval soldiers fighting with their combat display, join in a medieval dance, watch cooking displays, see a short medieval play, have a go at playing medieval games, learn about medieval medicine and clothes and meet the Lord of the Manor and his horse! Young visitors can also enjoy our medieval inspired craft activities and medieval trail, try on some medieval clothes and play with old toys and games. Entrance is FREE

A timetable for the day will be available on our Facebook page @sandwellmuseums a few days before the event but the knights fighting will be towards the end of the event.

Bromwich Hall was once the home of the Lords of the Manor of West Bromwich. The manor of Bromwich is mentioned in the Domesday book but the original manor buildings would have been elsewhere. The building was known as Bromwich Hall from when it was first built in the 1270s until the later 1800s when we see it starting to be known as the Old Hall or West Bromwich Old Hall. When the building became a pub in the 1960s it was given the name of 'The Manor House' but this name would never have been used in medieval times and beyond. The oldest parts of the building date to the 1270s with additions in the 1400s. The site has a fascinating history and some notable characters have lived on site. Come along and explore this fabulous building and it's stories and see it come alive with our medieval characters.
