This post is close to one end of the dam that holds back the spring water with which the pool is filled. A few metres ahead of you on the left was the site of a boathouse and as you walk on to the dam, beneath your feet, is a culvert that goes through the dam wall. This carries away surplus water from the pool and prevents it from overflowing. The photograph with the boat and swimmers was taken in the days of the private park. The young men are probably Mr. Best’s Bassano nephews and their friends. The other photograph shows the rustic bridge and in the distance the bandstand.
As you continue your walk you will see the remains of a circular hermitage – often known to local children as the witch’s hut! This, of course, was one of Mr. Best’s follies. It is believed that he considered employing a hermit who would engage his visitors in intellectual discussions but this did not come to fruition. Over the years it has been rebuilt several times.
