About

Work has now concluded on the £5.1 million-pound restoration and improvement project at West Smethwick Park.

The most significant investment for the park since it was opened in 1895. The improvements were possible from an award of a £4.5 million-pound grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund’s Parks for People grant with the remaining balance funded by Sandwell Council.

The Restoration and Improvement of West Smethwick Park

  • Restoration of the memorial to James Chance which is a Grade II-listed structure built in 1897.
  • Refurbishment of the wall and piers and recreating gates and railings at the entrance gateways in West Park Road and Victoria Road.
  • Restoration of the drinking fountain.
  • Construction of the new West Smethwick Park Pavilion.
  • Creating a new events area outside West Smethwick Park Pavilion.
  • Constructing a new boathouse feature.
  • Upgrading the multi-use games area to include tennis courts.
  • Nature conversation improvements including woodland, grassland and wetland work.
  • New outdoor gym equipment.
  • Restoration of the RAF airmen’s memorial where a plane crashed in 1944.

Pavilion

The new pavilion, set within the park’s natural surroundings, is a key feature of the restoration project. The building includes accessible toilets, a café, an indoor seating area, and an outdoor community space designed to support events and activities throughout the year. The Pavilion is open for community use and hire seven days a week from 9am to 4pm, offering a flexible venue for events, informal sports, classes, and local clubs. Private hire is also available until 10pm upon request for parties and organised events.

Café

Open seven days a week, the café operates 10:00–14:00 on weekdays and 10:00–16:00 on weekends, offering a convenient stop for residents, families, and park users. With friendly service and a comfortable environment, it serves as a great spot for a quick break or a leisurely visit throughout the year.

Sons of Rest

The Sons of Rest building is available for community use and hire, providing a flexible space suitable for meetings, small gatherings, activities, classes, and local clubs. Opening times for the building are arranged in line with bookings and are supported by staff based at West Smethwick Park Pavilion.
